‘I have, hold, keep” is investigates art as a form of ritual, and highlights artists discussing ritual, spirituality, transformation, intimacy, and healing through the subjects, themes, and images in their work. The artists in the exhibition create their work through the lens of their hispanic/latinx identity and reference their heritage as a source and influence on their work, often honoring and upholding tradition, or reshaping our perspectives on traditional ideals. These artworks bring forth ideas of mythology and ritual as a way to heal ourselves and others, while also demonstrating transformation through evidence or the use of relics.
Thoughts of healing and transformation are prevalent as we near the one year anniversary of Hurricane Maria in the Caribbean and the Central Mexican earthquakes, which occurs in the midst of our current crisis of family separation at the border and the uncertainty of DACA.
