The summer season heats up at the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) starting Saturday, July 13 with a pair of new shows: The Art of Coney Island 3, and In the Neighborhood.

The Art of Coney Island 3 is the latest edition of BWAC’s popular series, a juried show inspired by the city’s favorite destination for summer fun. Coney Island is a universally loved Brooklyn icon, a summer outing for New Yorkers for the past 201 years. It has always fascinated artists who are drawn to its unique charms, and wild, exciting, gritty beauty. Coney Island 3 celebrates all the attractions of the boardwalk; the sideshow, mermaid paraders, the Cyclone, Nathan’s hot dogs, and of course, the beach. Highlights will include sideshow banners painted by Coney Island royalty Marie Roberts; 3D dioramas created by Luis “Inca” Ramos and Erin Mathewson; plus photos, paintings, and sculpture by more than 90 artists. The show sprawls across two floors of the expansive 25,000 sq. ft. BWAC galleries in Red Hook and truly will have something for everyone. Stop by opening day and you may catch a mermaid and possibly Jelly Boy the Clown.

In the Neighborhood is the theme BWAC artists tackled in the members’ summer exhibition. The show endeavors to explore the artists’ personal perspective on their surroundings. Some may choose to represent the physical environment, others may seek to depict an inner architecture of human interaction or emotion. Each piece illustrates the attachments human beings create for the places they spend their lives.

The opening day for both shows will be Saturday, July 13, 2024, and they will remain on display through Sunday, August 11. The gallery is open weekends between the hours of 1 to 6 pm in the historic Beard and Robinson Warehouse Stores at 481 Van Brunt St. in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
