We are pleased to announce that as recipients of J-Collabo’s Ossam Gallery Annual Group Exhibition Gold Prize, Janie Samuels and Steve Ettlinger were awarded a two-person exhibition at Ossam Gallery, opening August 5th and running through August 15.
The show will feature over a dozen paintings, drawings and photo gel transfers by Samuels and twenty abstract wooden sculptures ranging in size from ten inches to seven feet tall by Ettlinger.
Samuels’ work is often in response to recurrent global or contemporary issues, and, as such, is intended to initiate a dialogue with the observer. Although the “refugee paintings” have been a regular thread running through her work for the past thirty years, all the work in the exhibition is simultaneously political and personal, universal and intimate. Her overall intent is to remind people of our similarities—not our differences, that which makes us all human.
Ettlinger works outdoors on Deer Isle, an island off the Maine coast with locally harvested cedar and spruce but also in a woodworking shop in Gowanus, Brooklyn (and sometimes in his front “yard” in Park Slope). His work starts with a chainsaw and finishes with ultra-fine sanding. Obviously inspired by Brancusi, he is devoted to abstract and geometric shapes.
