Art Over Time is a national juried exhibition at the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) Gallery in Red Hook, Brooklyn, from July 10 to August 15, 2021. Its purpose is to celebrate the art of people over the age of 65, and expose the general public to the fact that creating compelling art has no age limits.

Susan Handwerker, co-president of BWAC and co-curator of Art Over Time stated, “After a year in isolation, and contemplating the challenges and personal tragedies we all experienced, we at BWAC felt it was high time to celebrate the perseverance and longevity of people making great art well into their senior years.”

The exhibition juror is Charlotta Kotik, a former Head of the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Brooklyn Museum, and currently an independent curator who facilitates various projects for galleries, alternative spaces and museums. Tasked with selecting artwork of the highest quality, Ms. Kotik sought out art that displayed skill in a variety of materials, and how fully the artist’s intentions or concept is realized and presented.

While some of the artists discovered art later in life, others have been actively creating art throughout their lives. “Art is something you never retire from doing,” added co-curator Sandra Forrest.

The artwork displayed is further punctuated by the statements and explanations by the artists themselves that define how the exhibited work relates to their own art over time.

Art Over Time opens with a reception for the artists on Saturday, July 10 from 1-6 pm at the BWAC Gallery, 4581 Van Brunt Street, Red Hook, Brooklyn.
