The filmmakers behind Gowanus Current, an in-progress documentary feature, announce their exhibition “Gowanus Reflection.” This is a collection of prints from video still frames selected from the hundreds of hours of footage captured during the past seven years of making the film. The photographs will be displayed throughout the Gowanus neighborhood at the same locations they were originally recorded. In some cases, they reflect a dramatic remaking of the landscape. In others, the changes are more subtle. Viewers are encouraged to reflect on their own relationship to the changes in the community. What do we see reflected in the waters of the canal? How do these changes reflect our desires? Do we see ourselves reflected more now than when these images were recorded?

“Gowanus Reflection” is up now through November 11, 2020. Locations are throughout the Gowanus neighborhood. Viewers are encouraged to leave comments on the project’s website and continue the dialog with their neighbors. For a map of the locations and image descriptions of the photos for visually impaired people, visit GowanusCurrent.com/gowanus-reflection.

Gowanus Current is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council.
This project was completed with the support of the Women Make Movies Production Assistance
