The Brooklyn Waterfront Gallery (BWAC) reopened on Saturday, August 15, shelter-weary families looking for places to go and things to do can spend a weekend day at the Red Hook waterfront. Red Hook’s fine selection of restaurants are open for takeout, and options abound for everything from pizza and sandwiches to barbecue and lobster. Enjoy your lunch outdoors on the waterfront overlooking the Statue of Liberty, where there is ample space and sunshine for everyone. Then visit the BWAC Gallery at 481 Van Brunt, open weekends from 1 pm to 6 pm, where two art exhibits await you on two floors. The current exhibitions will be showing from Saturday, August 15 to Saturday, September 12, 2020. Or, leisurely view the art first and take home dinner afterwards. Featured now are:
Wide Open 11- A National Juried Exhibition on the ground floor

Now in its eleventh year and as its name implies, the broad theme of this exhibition looks to explore the idea of “wide open” in all the hidden niches of our collective psyche; It encompasses all the possibilities of knowledge, freedom and love: wide open space; arms wide open; eyes wide open. Yet, as with all things, there is the inevitable opposite: wide open to attack, corruption and failure.

What happens when you tell creative people to shelter in place? They get creative. Whether experimenting with new techniques or continuing explorations of concepts in their work, our artists have taken the inside and turned it out for the world to see.
Arts Administrator Elaine Mendez says, “BWAC is adhering to all the guidelines posted by the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs to ensure our visitors are safe and comfortable. Visitors are required to wear face coverings while inside the gallery. Fortunately, with 25,000 square feet of exhibition space, there is plenty of room in our gallery to practice safe social distancing.”
Alicia Degener, Co-President of the organization, added, “There truly is something for everyone to see in these exhibits, from the traditional to the most contemporary. See sculpture, installation art, paintings and drawings in all types of media. If you discover yourself particularly enthralled by an original work of art, you’ll find the prices affordable, too. Come to Red Hook for the art, and enjoy a great day. You’ll find the combination of nature and art a peaceful respite that will inspire your thinking and revive your spirit.”
