Richard Beavers Gallery Extends “God Trans” By Genesis Tramaine
“God is Trans” artist, Genesis Tramaine, believes that God exists at the intersection of both genders – male and female contrary to traditional religious beliefs. Each piece of the collection exemplifies a cerebral effort to identity God across gender, race, and religion. The exhibit which launched at the Richard Beavers Gallery on Saturday, June 14, 2018, received rave reviews from not only the press and loyal patrons, but also from painter and contemporary artist, Nathaniel Mary Quinn. Fittingly, “God is Trans” will be extended to September 1, 2018. There will also be an introduction of new works and an art talk, namely “Saturday Service,” on August 11, 2018, due to the compassionate and sometimes empathic acceptance of Genesis’ views.
To understand, “God is Trans,” one must become familiar with the brilliant eyes and thoughts of Genesis Tramaine who, by sight, is gender neutral and androgynous. How Genesis perceives God and other religious figures is translated on each canvas with exquisite mastery of line and color, yielding spiritual energy and much ambiguity. Although, one viewer states, “The artist’s portraits channel Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francis Bacon,” Genesis Tramaine is unique because of a technique and story that are “her” own – a masculine spirited female artist who truly believes in Christianity and God despite rejection from the institution of Church.
The Richard Beavers Gallery is pleased to open up the conversation at “Saturday Service”:

About Genesis Tramaine
A female painter with a masculine spirit, her passion translates into abstract portraits of men and women who transcend political or representative blackness. She considers the individual because that is the way she wishes to be considered. Painting is one way Genesis connects with her complexion as a woman. Her paintings invoke the voices of ancestors and give praise to the world around her while exploring ethics and insanity, the mundane and inhumane, spirituality, sexuality, and sentimentality.
Employing raw canvas, mixed media, found objects, and daily treasures, Genesis’ strokes unmask southern comforts and urban Brooklyn battles. Her untrained hand leans on self-taught, freestyle techniques to communicate an innate understanding of traditional African art. Focused on the shape and definition of the American Black face, exaggerated features capture the spirited emotions of the untapped, underrepresented soul of Black people through a mix of collage, acrylic, and oil based paint. The blueprint of her style is rooted in the Harlem Renaissance mixed with 1980’s New York graffiti.
