FiveMyles presents In my sleep I migrate back by artist-in-residence Roya Amigh.
OPENING RECEPTION: August 5, 2017, 4:30 – 7:00pm
ON VIEW: August 5 – August 27, 2017
In my sleep I migrate back explores how imagination and memory filter resurrect the past. In recreating imagery that pieces together elements of different legends depicted in Persian miniature and the writings of Persian poets Ferdowsi, Rumi, and Hafez, the artist questions the complexities in the stories of Iranian women. Echoing the natural distortions of memory, she creates her own version of this mythology in practice. Whether hugging the wall, hovering in corners, or floating at waist level, the exhibition stirs feelings of dissociation and disorientation.
Roya Amigh is FiveMyles’ artist-in-residence for July 2017. Amigh came to Boston University from Tehran in 2010 for a second M.F.A. At first exploring luminous color under neo-expressionist painter John Walker, she soon turned to making gestural line drawings reminiscent of the Persian miniatures familiar to her childhood. Forsaking traditional drawing materials, she began to glue lines of colored thread onto translucent papers and cotton duck, building these into tenuous structures strung across interior spaces.
