Casablanca Cocktail Lounge in Bed Stuy Brooklyn New York will open a unconventional exhibition featuring artwork from Queens native Ashleigh Alexandria aka The Virginartiste on April 30th. Wildflower will feature a series of new paintings and prints by Ashleigh all of which includes her latest body art series subtitled Virgin Skin. Her pieces address the beauty and sisterhood among Black and Brown women(people)told with a retrofuturistic tone.
Born in Washington Heights, NY and raised in Jamaica Queens, NY Ashleigh Alexandria was constantly surrounded by the arts. She took several classes at Jamaica arts center which included drama, pottery,and drawing.In high school she took a painting class which prompted her to pursue art in college. Entering Hampton University in 2008 had a powerful impact on her artistic skill development.In 2012 She graduated from Hampton University with a Fine Arts degree.
Virgin Skin is the expression of everyday life told with paint. The organic nature of her subjects stems from real relationships and true emotions. The art brings out the importance of ordinary mundane intimate moments we may take for granted daily, while still telling a visual story.
Wildflower will be Ashleigh’s second solo showcase since 2008.
