John Doe is pleased to present Think Small, the debut solo exhibition of designer Takeshi Miyakawa, on view through May 28th, 2017. Bringing his designs to the public in an intimate, interactive setting, Think Small showcases Miyakawa’s experiments at the limits of function and structure.
Miyakawa systematically dissembles the conventions of objects, at times displacing materials from their typical applications, at others inverting preconceived notions of permanence and challenging expectations of stability. By addressing familiar functions with novel forms, Miyakawa’s designs compel us to re-calibrate relationships with our tools and surroundings.
The artist’s formal language is informed by his work in architecture on all scales, from his start as a site supervisor to his current position in the model shop of Rafael Vinoly Architects. In Think Small, the viewer is given the rare opportunity to encounter both study models and final built objects, gaining insight into Miyakawa’s process and meeting the seedlings of future designs.
Think Small is on show at John Doe from May 12th to 28th. Please join us for the opening reception on Friday, May 12th, 6-9pm. Hours: Fri – Sun 11am – 6pm, and by appointment at info@johndoe-ny.com
