Kayrock Gallery is pleased to announce Sapal, a solo exhibition of works by San Francisco-based artist, Conrad Guevara. The exhibition will run from August 19th through Sep 9th, with an opening reception on Aug 19th from 6-9pm. Kayrock Gallery is located at 1205 Manhattan Ave Unit 1-4-1 on the 4th floor in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
Sapal ng niyog is coconut pulp; the dry, inert, yet edible remains of the fruit once all of its more valuable and delicious assets have been removed to satisfy growing global demand.
Reflecting on the practice of wringing every last bit out of the coconut, this exhibition is comprised of 16 abstract paintings (particles) – some complete with sticks, stems, pits and seeds, serval thin bands painted on the walls (strainers), and a small sculpture (sapling). Together the work forms a constellational logic around the squishing, squeezing, and pressing of resource extraction, the perpetual motion of the global fruit trade, and the work of Constancio Bernardo, “the incarnate spirit behind abstraction in Philippine painting”.
The exhibition will also feature Guevara’s Fresh Print!, Kalamansi, published with Kayrock in 2016.
