Statement
Elena Yamamoto’s works are thoughts bound up in sources, process, and materials: photos made from negatives that my father took when he was just a few years older than myself; the sun-soaked cyanotype prints with their natural, distinctive, and seductive blue; silk in its softness, its play in the light, its living quality; cedar with its scent and preservative property.

All of these materials, all of these things, each personally important and meaningful, are tied and pinned and sewn together—slowly, quietly, meditatively—in order to become a collection of intimate, personal objects. These objects are manifestations of time spent with ideas, created by a repeated motion of the hand, thought on and thought about. Some of them are just small musings, haphazard thoughts made big through the time it took to meditate and make them, while others are those big ideas of family, legacy, intimacy, and relationships, made small and manageable through their expression in the physical.

These objects—reliquaries, even—contain elusive, ineffable thoughts. Words and sentences and explanations tend to limit our understanding of things, failing to capture ideas and experiences in their entirety, reducing the complexities of feelings and emotions to mere sentiment. And so here instead, I, with cautious hands, tug and pull to lay bare my quiet, personal thoughts and moments for you to ponder.

Artist Statement
In the series "Fingerprints" I’m looking for a reinterpretation of reality, namely urban elements taken from the places I explore. Walls, floors, garbage trucks or any other terrestrial material, which are the basis for my work, are reviewed and contrasted to the extreme, sometimes highly detailed or otherwise deliberately letting appear the original pixels. The result has a strong emphasis on organic, abstract and highly pictorial work.

Artist’s Statement
Film, obsession and beauty
The focus of my work is in the chance union of forms, symbols, images and colors. It is through cosmetics, in the sense of making up the world in an almost shaman-like manner, that my work plays with a pre-established language of beauty pervasive in popular culture and attempts to establish a complicated link to a mythological world. My work is about obsession and beauty.

Bio/Resume

Artist Statement
One of the oldest cities in the world, Jerusalem has always been infused with fracture and duplicity, which carry on to this day in the city’s fabric and leaders. As reverent home to three of the world’s major religions, Jerusalem embodies Foucault’s idea of a heterotopia — an impossible space where parallel contradictory layers exist.

Using reflective surfaces in my constructs, it is often unclear whether an image is the thing itself or its reflection. I avoid the traditional horizon, and the compositions can become purposefully disorienting. A photographic image can be thought of as a belief system in itself, and as such, I hope to create a structure infused with doubt.

Artist Statement

“TILT-SHIFT”ing the World

Tilt-Shift, What type of photography is that? people always ask me. How do I make people look so small or why do I make people look so small, simple…WE ARE. In the big picture we are just a small blip of what the world truly is. I enjoy the power I have to change the perspective of the way people look at the world and maybe at themselves.

Photographers need inspiration like all artists of all types of art, mine is travel. From my series “Tilt-Shift”ing the world you can see only a small piece of the world that I have seen. Travel-Photography, Photography-Travel, they go hand in hand with me. The love of both is one. My passion to try and make the iconic places and structures that man desires to see and has for centuries traveled to see, is the same desire that drives me to go there and photograph them. I have been an avid photographer for over 25 years and have taken thousands upon thousands of photographs of iconic buildings. I’ve had the pleasure to “X” off from a list that grows and grows as new architects from around the world build new buildings for me to see and explore.

Life is said to be too short and I agree with that simple statement. I have goals like every artist does and mine is to “X” off as many places around the world until I run out of places to see or I run out of time.

Artist Statement

Of human life time is a point, and the substance is in flux…and what belongs to the soul is dream and vapor….
Marcus Aurelius, The Meditations

The work I create first originates as a response to overlooked space that is in a continual state of change. I believe that in everyone there is a sense of flux and a familiarity with this type of space physically and emotionally.

These images are not manipulated on the computer but are multiple exposures onto one negative at a specific location. In this way each image captures a state of flux within a moment and location which has actually transpired.

Transitory spaces have a messy human energy which is always in the present yet constantly changing. I find them endlessly interesting, alive places where there is a great deal of beauty and fragility. They are temporary monuments to the ephemeral nature of human existence in a constant state of change.

Artist Statement
I think of cameras, along with photographs, as cultural artifacts. In the same way that an anthropologist can look at jewelry or clothing to learn about the culture that created those things, the design of a camera and the photos it takes can tell us about the culture that created them.

The camera, as we know it today, evolved out of Renaissance painting experiments in linear-perspective. A few curious chemists simply put a piece of light-sensitive paper in the light path. As a result of this particular history, photographic images still bear a strong aesthetic kinship with western painting. Stripped of its cultural history a “camera” is simply an enclosed object with a hole in one side through which light enters. As such, the camera predates photography by thousands of years. With these factors of origin, evolution, and technology as a starting point, my work asks the question: “what would photography look like if it had grown out of a different aesthetic tradition?”

The photos I make explore the representation of space, time, and narrative through a panoramic style. Using a specially modified camera I shoot directly onto long rolls of color slide-film. The image fills the entire film-strip, without any frame breaks, looking much like a photographic scroll. The strips of slide-film, which can be up to 100-ft long, are displayed on light-boxes. The long horizontal strips of film serve as both as a measure of the dimensions of the subject and also as a record of the subjects movement over time.

Biography
With an extensive background in the visual and performing arts, Kwabena Slaughter brings together fresh new ideas on the nature of art and aesthetic experience. His current work in photography investigates the relationship between the camera, photography, and the painting traditions that precede it. Instead of accepting the historical narrative that leads from linear-perspective, through the camera obscura, to photography; Kwabena imagines an alternative history, one in which photography grows out of scroll-painting. Working with cameras that the artist modifies himself, Kwabena makes single images that occupy the entire length of a strip of slide-film. These strips of film can be up to 60-feet long.

Kwabena’s video and photographic work has been shown at premier institutions in the U.S. and abroad, including the New Museum, and the Studio Museum in Harlem. He has been a resident at the Art Omi International Artists Residency, the Center for Photography at Woodstock, the Bronx Museum’s AIM Program,
and Smack Mellon Gallery. His grant credits include the New Media and Technology Grant from the New York State Council on the Arts. Kwabena’s performing arts credits include acting in the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival, dancing with a trapeze-dance company, and stage-managing for a clown school. His writing on aesthetics has been published in the journal “Philosophy and Social Action”.

Wormholes in a Tree

Artist Statement
Big Dreams focuses around the idea that humankind shares a sort of imagery bank; elementary ideas from the beginning of time or archetypes as described by Carl Jung. With that said, the concept of elementary ideas or archetypes does not belong solely to modern psychology or modern anything actually. Primitive cultures too recognized and drew upon imagery that commonly resonated with their society. In this project I am looking for big ideas reflected in the natural and modern landscape.

Singular Beauty

“The best of beauty is a finer charm than skill in surfaces, in outlines, or
rules of art can ever teach, namely, a radiation from the work of art of human character.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

This collection of photographs resulted from both a personal struggle with body issues, and a long history in the beauty business. In photographing these doctor’s offices, I not only developed my visual understanding of the world, but I was able to reconcile my own feelings about beauty. I found myself less interested the actual place or thing, than in capturing the emotional significance of it–for myself as an artist–and for those who sought their salvation in these chairs, beds, machines and tools.

SEASCAPES
The seascapes are a series titled “Anywhere But Here”. The series consists of 436 different scenes. The water is actually 1/8″ thick pieces of clear, vacuum-formed plastic. The varied molded forms create the wave structure. The water color is created by placing layers of acetate underneath the plastic. The coloring and sky are created with lights and backdrops. The entire construction is eight inches square. I shot the scenes with a 35 mm camera using a macro lens. I chose to shoot this small film size so that the image would be grainy when enlarged. The photograph then literally breaks down. This is intended to reinforce the idea that the image is a simulation. They have been shown singularly and as installations of between 1,113 and 2,712 images mounted to walls (each photo is 4″ x 6″).

ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Postcards, billboards and magazines instill in us a desire to be physically and emotionally transported to “a better place”. We see digitally enhanced, perfectly-lit and styled homes, gardens and people. These commercial images are merely representations, completely unattainable. These constructions are meant to instill longing in the viewer.

I, too, create such non-places: images that appear real, but are, in fact, simulations. I construct images of locales, persons and lifestyles. My work is meant to isolate and emphasize the desire for the other, which is, in the end, just a creation. The viewer is left to consider this cycle of desire and dissatisfaction.

We peruse decorating and travel magazines, read adventure travel stories and scan billboards. These things instill in us a desire to have and/or be somewhere else, someone else, but some place where all our wants may be fulfilled.

Artist Statement
My own work is largely concerned with the meaning and existence of the self in today’s unstable, fragmented world, specifically how the individual is able to reconcile the external and internal forces that cause us to function in different, often contradictory, roles. Performative in essence, frequently employing role play and adopting multiple or different personas, my work not only reconstructs and documents other’s lives, but regularly becomes an intense examination of my own. The photographs in my latest body of work are an exploration of my own private experience with love and intimacy. Derived from what began as collaboration with my romantic partner, Michael, the work is an embodiment of my own subconscious forces at work, mixed with real events.

More specifically, the work chronicles the obsessive nature of our romantic relationship, and its overwhelming effect on my life, visually attempting to eliminate the distinction between dreams and reality, reason and madness, and objectivity and subjectivity by merging everyday occurrences with psychological aberrations. Fragmented, the events it depicts are not literal but figurative illustrations of a unique psychological state resulting from the self-reflexive nature of our relationship and the psychological breakdown between oppositional forces that comes with love; the internal and external, the self and the other, presence and absence and lucidity and blindness.

Lexi No. 2

Artist Statement

I am a self-taught photographer who grew up in Dallas, TX and now live in New York City. When creating my work I look for interesting colors, patterns, and textures that will create a dynamic palette in the final photo. I am intrigued by the interaction of humans and nature to create “hidden” art. This hidden art presented as abstract photography with dramatic colors and textures has now become a very prominent feature in my work.

The body of work that I am working on currently is Water Colors. The Water Colors Collection combines my intrigue in the art of painting and my love of photography and colors. Water Colors initially appear, perhaps, as an artist’s painting but could be called “nature’s paintings” because nature and time provide the texture and patterns that transform the ordinary subjects into discovered art. This art is then captured through the lens of the camera.

Water Colors photos are taken with a digital camera and software is used to brighten the colors to their rich and vibrant levels. Every Water Colors print is unique and everyone’s “vision” individual.

Artist Statement

I consider myself a street photographer; my camera is always on hand and I shoot at anything that strikes my interest in public places. I constantly pay attention to people, composition and lighting.

My love for New York City has always motivated me. The city offers a plethora of visual stimuli and my goal is to capture this visual bounty. I have had a strong commitment to street photography since 1988. I capture reality – by using a wide-angle lens and avoiding postcard compositions. I seek the raw, claustrophobic crowd and congestion of the city, not just with people, but also inanimate objects. I relish people or objects that get in the way of the otherwise “perfect” shot.

Over the years, I have developed a style that combines the finesse of fine art with the grit of street photography. Unusual captures, composition and angles burst through my city scenes.

Artist Statement (excerpt)

My artistic practice is engaged with exploiting the ambiguity of visual experience–the disparity between what we see and what we think we see creates a surprise of metaphors. I want to engage the viewer in the place where the collective intersects with the individual’s consciousness. The work draws from many different visual elements such as the role of the structural, the system, the technological, the biological, the ephemeral, the fabricated, and the decorative, and for me, it is a meditation on the complexity of experiencing an increasingly dense environment of elements.

I work here in New York City and find the people, places, and objects of the city are the building blocks I am using. Many of the photographs reflect an interest in certain types of actors and their visual performances: people as reflected in and by the architecture of the urban landscape, bits and pieces of patterns and textual material, and how it all expresses itself visually.

Artist Statement (excerpt)

Where do the images come from? I cannot possibly know. I can only know that it is my task to make them.

I use a number of methods in the process of translation. Most of these are based on Surrealist techniques- automatic writing, recording of dreams, and some techniques like grottage.

When I start to make notes for the images, they are part words and part picture. They are never brought entirely into the conscious realm. When processing the film, I use several kinds of tools to mutilate and remove some sections of emulsion. I use sandpaper and various objects to scratch the negatives before printing. In processing some of the prints, I use additional chemicals like iodine bleach, or I apply paint to them. For some of the prints, I’ve used infrared film stock.

REST IN PIECES
Limited Edition Color Photograph of original sculpture by Carol Quint
10″ x 8″ photo

Artist Statement
The foundation of my work is the exploration of archetypal imagery. The images become surrogates for a broad range of emotional experience. They are grounded in symbols that elicit recognition on a subconscious level.

Currently, I am building sculptures that are in themselves artifacts, evidence of my efforts, which are now in the past.

My process involves creating, recycling and reconstruction. The content and function of these works reflects both a sense of time past and time present, qualities that are in the nature of a relic.

Artist Statement

I favor a compound approach to all visual problems that occupy me. By compound I mean multiform – I present my solution to a given problem in as many forms or through as many means as are available to me. These may be painting, printmaking, sculpting… The meaning of each completed piece is deferred until other pieces, materially and thematically linked to it, are completed. They form the understructure upon which their meaning could rest.

Not able to describe a piece outside of its progressing context I hesitate whenever I am asked for an “artist’s statement”. I cannot “state” my art’s meaning; its current subject, however, can be “stated” – it is rectilinear geometry.
