ART 101 presents REGINA BOGAT STARS

MAY 31 – JULY 1 OPENING RECEPTION : MAY 31, 6 – 9 PM

It is a privilege to welcome this fine artist back to her native borough. Regina Bogat was born in Brooklyn, New York. She is the widow of the painter Alfred Jensen and has two children, Anna and Peter. She lives and paints in New Jersey. She has crossed two rivers in order to have this show.

Bogat’s initial fascination with the octagon led to the evolution of these paintings. Ogdoadic (8 points), Decagon (10 points), and Heptadic (7 points) stars will be shown. While it is tempting to explore the meaning of the stars — the why and wherefore of the artists’s choice of subject matter — that desire falls away as one is drawn into the stars themselves and the mysterious swirling layers of paint and light. The stars emerge from the background and then they become the background. The paintings are their own mystique.

Regina Bogat has a long and distinguished history of exhibitions in the U.S. especially New York and New Jersey. Her work has also been included in group shows in Germany and Switzerland and in many prominent collections. Most recently, she has shown with Fausto Sevila at the Simon Liu gallery in 2006. Upon seeing one of Bogat’s paintings, the critic John Caldwell wrote, ” The painting is very large, but every inch of it is activated, both in terms of form and color….Quite frankly I have never seen anything like it. Miss Bogat is revealed here as a direct uncompromising sensibility…”

Art 101 is located at 101 Grand Street, in Brooklyn, New York. Hours are Friday through Sunday,1 to 6, or by appointment. 718-302-2242. The gallery is wheelchair accessible. www.art101brooklyn.com

NYPH’12 will explore the matrix of art photography and social documentary through four curators creating sites and live events exploring the origins and meeting points of art photography and documentary work:

Glenn Ruga will premiere a phenomenal collection of masterworks from Bruce Davidson, Reza, Eugene Richards, Rina Castelnuovo, and Platon walking the fine line between doc art—or art doc—in On the Razor’s Edge: Between Documentary and Fine Art Photography

Amy Smith-Stewart will debut a smashing curated show entitled What Do You Believe In, featuring a select group of of sixteen artists— Jen DeNike, Hank Willis Thomas, Leah Beeferman, Stuart Hawkins, Yamini Nayar, Fay Ray, Luke Stettner, Anissa Mack, Kenya Robinson, Xaviera Simmons, Nicole Cherubini, Nyeema Morgan, Sara Greenberger Rafferty, Matthew Spiegelman, Daniel Gordon, Ignacio Lang—and explores how photography shapes our ideas—who we are, why we do the things we do, how our thinking happens, and where it evolves.

Claude Grunitzky will delight the senses and the imagination with work from Evangelia Kranioti, Irmelie Krekin, and Christian Witkin in the Curse and the Gift: “Photography is a way of life, and as we all become touch-screen photographers, emailing and Facebooking away, art photography takes on an entirely new meaning in its role in helping us to understand the way we live now. With our modern societies in flux, and many forms of cohesion in jeopardy, it helps to reflect on those changing human dynamics by looking at images that were composed calmly, away from the pressure of instant delivery.”

Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky, That Subliminal Kid will stupefy the senses with Sinfonia Antarctica (The Book of Ice). For the New York Photo Festival, Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky takes a look at how the role of the “archive” of Antarctic history—in photography, graphic design, and contemporary composition—has shaped some of the ways we think about contemporary digital media aesthetics. In conjunction with NYPH’12, Miller will present material from his recent Book of Ice project through the prism of an intersection of sculpture, architecture, live performance, moving image, and digital media installation.

They will also feature juried work from the New York Photo Festival Invitational, an online submission-based review platform run by the festival. More information available at http://nyph.at/

Opens Friday, May 11th, 6pm – 9pm

The Manhattan Bridge, standing like a proud cobalt giant, stretching its outreached arms to connect two landscapes and bring people together. With feet of stone resting peacefully in the muddy waters of the East River, the steel structure radiates with an electric individuality that beams across boroughs. This symbolic artery of New York City possesses an astute flair of personality that serves as an inspiration and muse to the people who are lucky enough to be touched by its magic. Mighty Tanaka is proud to bring you our next show, Shifting Perspectives, a solo exhibition featuring the artwork of Alexandra Pacula, as she interprets the vibrant nuances of this world recognized landmark.

Shifting Perspectives exemplifies Alexandra Pacula’s trademark style of painting dubbed “Visual Intoxication”. The abstract yet photo realist nature of her work provides dynamic movement to an otherwise stationary object, allowing it to come to life and move freely around the canvas. A virtual vortex of light and motion envelops the artwork, which tempts the eye and draws in the viewer.

With a confident hand, Alexandra Pacula demonstrates the expansive versatility of her technique through the inspirational power of her subject matter. Her ability to manipulate oil paint into a highly complex and mind bending experience solidifies the various Shifting Perspectives of her artwork.

“E-Vapor-8″, titled after a 1992 track by the rave band Altern 8, explores the influence and relationship between contemporary art and rave and electronic music culture. Here everything can be taken from ‘the archive’ and reworked – the surface glare of squeaky voice, the speed of imagery and sound, infantalist fashion, smiley faces, pirate radio, fractal imagery, hyper color fluorescents, sample-style editing processes, found footage of dancing and parties, Spiral Tribe’s politicization, and kiddie-rave pop songs. There are more serious ideas behind the visual and aural melting pot. Ideas around community, technology, intellectual and physical freedom, rebellion and myth-making all play into this wave of contemporary work.

Rave is now positioned, aesthetically and aurally, as a proto universe for contemporary, technology-infused art. House and rave provided some of the first examples of defunct technologies being co-opted and reused by a younger generation for creative purposes. Computer-made graphics once used as rave visuals are now considered precursors to online experimentation. The processes of cut and paste, sampling and looping that were the basis of DIY electronic music are echoed in video editing techniques and online footage amalgams. Early house and rave culture provided a model of democratization of culture, just as contemporary visual artists consider their use of the internet now. The hedonistic drug references of the period are gone. The moment of mass cultural upheaval has passed. We are left with a sense of DIY utopia and the desire to create work that is immediate, sensorial, and at times simply fun.

Moustaches, baseball and letterpress cards

Release Party May 3rd from 6-9pm at the Bergino Clubhouse

Left Field Cards is pleased to announce the release of “Marvelous Moustaches”, the third in the ever expanding series of letterpress baseball cards by Brooklyn-based French artist Amelie Mancini.

Following the success of the “Bizarre Injuries” and “Edible All-Stars” series, Amelie Mancini now takes on baseball and facial hair. “Marvelous Moustaches” features ten ballplayers famous for sporting out-of-the-ordinary moustaches, such as Goose Gossage’s unforgettable horseshoe, Rollie Fingers’s fancy handlebar, Don Mattingly’s classic magnum or Rod Beck’s straight forward trucker moustache.

Left Field Cards brings a unique and playful spin on the trading cards loved and collected by generations of fans: the cards are hand printed and postcard-sized, with space in the back for a note, address, and a stamp in lieu of statistics. Each series plays around an unusual theme, such as weird injuries or food-related names, or in the case of “Marvelous Moustaches”, remarkable facial hair.

Amelie Mancini draws and hand carves each design on a linoleum block, which is then used to print on a Vandercook letterpress. The hand printed cards are packed in a hand sewn vellum wrapper and sold in packs of five cards for $15. They can be purchased online and in a selection of stores in Brooklyn, Chicago, Seattle and Portland.

Amelie Mancini is a French-born painter and printmaker living in Brooklyn, NY. After moving to America in 2006, she fell in love with baseball and started Left Field Cards in 2011. Her cards have been featured in the LA Times and Marie- Claire Italia, and on several sports and design blogs such as Design*Sponge, Juxtapoz, The Citrus Report, Uni-Watch and UrbanDaddy.

The Bergino Baseball Clubhouse is hosting a release party for “Marvelous Moustaches” on May 3rd from 6 to 9pm. In addition to the cards, some of the artist’s large baseball paintings will also be on display in the gallery.

In 2002, Mary Westring traveled to Uganda to confront the ongoing abduction of children who were taken by the Lord’s Resistance Army and used as porters, child soldiers and “wives”. She documented these children through individual portraits expressing their pain and suffering.

Ten years later, Mary has again documented these Children of Conflict, this time with young adults who have lived through this horrific past and become the next generation addressing the changing needs of Uganda. Profoundly different from the children depicted ten years ago, this grouping shows healthy, hopeful and joyous young adults who are now attending college.

Mary and her family have worked for many years to bring attention to this crisis through a small but dedicated organization, uccef.org, which continues to provide much needed support for the positive changes in these children’s lives.

Figureworks is honored to be able to showcase these portraits with their stories.

Katherine Newbegin
This image is from the Moonlight Cinema in Kolkata, India. In a way, this photograph is a lie. There were at least ten people watching me when I took this image. I only had about fifteen minutes between the shows in order to shoot this image, and I was lucky the owner let me do it. Most of these small, single screen cinemas are closing down, as the new mega-plexes move in. Getting permission to photograph was very hard, especially in Mumbai.

YOLANDA SHASHATY NEW PAINTINGS

OPENING RECEPTION : THURSDAY 26 APRIL, 6 – 9 PM

We are pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Yolanda Shashaty : April 27 through May 22. The opening reception will take place on Thursday, April 26, from 6 to 9 pm. Shashaty has previously exhibited at ART 101, in group shows and a solo show in 2009. The new work is something of a departure for her, “I’ve let go of the landscape to concentrate on color, texture, and spatial relationship, which has been liberating.” Shashaty’s use of color is always a pleasure to experience, and while the paintings are not based on landscape as we know it, the work is informed by her understanding of the colors and configurations in the natural world. Yolanda Shashaty’s work has been exhibited widely in New York, in both the city and a number of upstate venues. She has had one-woman shows in New York, Washington, D.C., Ohio and Connecticut and she has participated in shows at The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art and the Butler Institute

ART 101 is located at 101 Grand Street, Brooklyn, NY 11249. Gallery hours are Friday through Sunday from 1 to 6 or by appointment; 718-302-2242. www.art101brooklyn.com

Mighty Tanaka presents: The Birds and The Bees
Featuring the artwork of Gigi Chen & H. Veng Smith

Spring is the season for growth and renewal and with it, people come together in joyous celebration. Drunk off the familiar sensation of green grasses and blossoming flora, the world is alive and full of inspiration. A romantic essence fills the air with an intoxicating blend of rejuvenating aromas that tempts the body and plays with the mind. It is easy to lose oneself in the cacophony of reawakening, as senses are overloaded and forged into the memory. Through the enchanted feelings resides a notion of self-discovery that enables reckless abandonment, which leads to a multitude of outcomes. Mighty Tanaka is pleased to bring you our springtime show, The Birds and The Bees, featuring the fantastical artwork of Gigi Chen & H. Veng Smith.

The Birds and The Bees is a traditional metaphor for love, yet it also encompasses the sharp stinging pain of loss. It is a constant reminder of balance and desire as well as the shock of reality. As the warmth grows, so does the undergrowth and the tangle of vines and thorns, creating an ever-challenging terrain of hope and expectations to navigate.

Both Gigi Chen and H. Veng Smith utilize a host of inspiring techniques to create their individual work. Both artists create their work from oil paint, yet their achieved outcome differs greatly. As the days grow longer and the sun shines a little brighter, it’s the perfect setting for The Birds and The Bees to come out to play.

Muriel Guépin Gallery is pleased to announce “Detritus Splendors”, an exhibition featuring the artworks of Matthew Conradt & Jennifer Williams

This new exhibition featuring collage and installation celebrates and investigates everyday items that are disposed of in a whole new way.

Jennifer Williams- Swim

Opening Reception, Friday April 27, 2012

6:30 – 8 pm

The show will be on view through June 3, 2012

Matthew Conradt- Growing up in the mid-western rust belt, images of wood paneling from trailer homes, giant parking lots, or elaborate, wealthy interiors became portents and signifiers of the substantial class differences that currently exist in this country. Reconstructing scenes of American dreams, or of a capitalist society attempting to define itself, Matthew Conradt creates large-scale collages by printing found digital images from all kinds of media and photo-transferring them onto mylar. Through the act of appropriation, he wants to show the disparities between the realities of the country and the perceptions we show ourselves. What emerges is an American counter-narrative that is steeped in contradictions.

Jennifer Williams – By documenting, deconstructing, and re-composing visual elements of the city, Jennifer Williams gives form to dissonance within the urban geography. The use of photography in her work is cumulative; she uses archival and current self-generated images to build large-scale collage-type forms. Her site-specific compositions work around, through, and over shape, searching for the moment when the initial form “falls off”. By creating pathways that activate passive or overlooked elements within a space, she directs the viewer to engage with it in its entirety. The constructions encourage the use of photography not as a tool to stop time, but instead to control the flow of time passing. At its core her work is an amalgamation of traditional photographic languages and a syntax belonging to the twentieth-century sculptural tradition.

CHRISTINA MASSEY
Business & Pleasure
A solo exhibition at the Corridor Gallery Project Space

OPENING RECEPTION Sunday, April 15th 4-6pm.

April 13th – May 19th

Business & Pleasure comes to the Corridor Gallery Project Space a solo exhibition of Christina Massey. Massey’s bold compositions are painterly and sculptural creations of recycled work clothes, older paintings, and new visceral paint elements.

In the exhibition Business and Pleasure there is a sense of violence in the deconstruction and a sexualized tenderness holding pieces together as they fold into each other. Bold colors slice and fold through the paintings, off setting these tactile squares.

Massey’s inspiration is driven from “the Economic Recession, Bank Bail Outs and the emotional ups and downs that have followed these events, I literally “destroyed” my past work in order to rebuild it in a new form.” These organic pieces resemble tattered earthy quilts that are reminiscent of the artist’s personal journey, which resonates with the economic ups and downs to which everyone can relate.

Corridor Gallery is open Fridays – Saturdays from 12 to 6pm and by appointment.

http://www.corridorgallerybrooklyn.org/

“Efflorescence,” (detail) monotype, 2011

Bloom can be flowering, soft petals pushing through the hard casing of a bud. It is also the bloom of mold through the rind of a cheese or a damp wall; the efflorescence of mineral salts on the surface of concrete; the bloom of oil on water or algae in the sea. In this sense bloom is a process where transformation occurs from within and without simultaneously, which finds a parallel in the abstract paintings and monotypes of Linda Tharp. Come share a glass of cheer and toast all things blooming at Sweet Lorraine Gallery on Saturday April 14th, from 6 to 8 pm. Sweet Lorraine Gallery is a hidden treasure in Red Hook, Brooklyn, a short walk from the shops and restaurants of Carroll Gardens.
