World Money Gallery is pleased to announce Hot garbage!, a two person exhibition featuring new works by Emily Miller and David Henry Nobody Jr.
The works in Hot Garbage! are linked in their exploration of the cultural notion of “trash” applied to the self / self-worth in the context of a rapidly gentrifying and mutating Brooklyn. While David work’s celebrates a tongue in cheek sexuality inherent in the concept of “trashy,” Emily turns literal trash into reverent oil paintings. The subject of Trash applied to their lives becomes the artists punky resistance to consumerist forces larger than themselves, that they are force fed and assaulted by.
David Henry Nobody Jr pushes his resemblage style to another realm, stepping out of the frame of self portraiture in favor of sculpting on the female form using foam. The resulting “veiled female mutation(s)” are saturated in a weird sensuality that rings true to David’s running resemblage series. There is a search for a new sense of connection with a metamorphosed identity in the altered and ghostly forms.
Emily Miller’s rich oil paintings of discarded Newport packs directly reference her Snapchat posts of Newports encountered on the ground while commuting in NYC. Despite being garbage, Miller finds the Newport packs to be aesthetically beautiful in the many forms they are left as on the street; a handprint of an individual that’s part of a larger whole. The Newports become imbibed with a (contradictory) sense of connectedness and community, which has been a point of contention for Emily as a self-aware gentrifier with a guilty, Catholic soul.
Opening reception will be held September 3, 2016 from 6 pm – 10 pm.
