Yuki Kano – “Figurative Studies”

Yuki Kano is a visual artist from Tokyo, Japan, whose work ranges from representational to geometric/abstract art inspired by nature, music, and her life in both the city and the suburbs of New York. She works in different mediums depending on the project and creates works on paper or canvas that are intricate or realistic.

Having a father who likes to draw and a mother who is crafty, she always had a fascination with art. She spent her childhood in both China and Japan and attended American and International schools throughout middle school, where art was always her favorite subject. She involved herself in many of the creative opportunities that were offered, and after winning an award at her school’s book mark design competition and her year book cover design was chosen during middle school, she decided that she wanted to become a designer.

She moved to the United States to continue her education, and felt for the first time that her skills in art were nothing compared to the other art students that she had encountered. With the notion that the art world is competitive, along with the negative stereotype of “starving artists”, she abandoned her dream of becoming a designer. She pursued psychology in college, which was another interest to her, and also studied art therapy, but in the end, she realized that she needs to be in the art world and earned a BFA in Mixed Studios from Long Island University.

She is currently living and working in New York City, and has had numerous solo exhibitions and group shows around New York.
