Scenes of Inequality: Art Opening+Raga Performance+Benefit For Indian Women

In honor of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day (March 8th), please join us for the opening of NYC artist/activist Cristina Winsor’s new mixed media show “Scenes of Inequality and Late Capitalism: Mumbai, New York and Beyond.”

Cristina recently spent several months at two artist residencies – one in Mumbai and one in the rural artisan village of Ragharajpur (Orissa, India) – where she witnessed many of the situations that appear in this show.

Inspired by memories of these and other quotidian incidents reflecting harsh economic and social inequality around the world, Cristina mixed ink, watercolor, acrylic and collage on watercolor paper and employed vibrant colors and layers to build images of feelings and impressions.

We are also privileged to have members of NYC based Raga/Chamber/Folk ensemble, Karavika (named after the mythical, soulful songbird found in Buddhist texts) providing musical accompaniment during the evening. And the full band performs a featured set at 8p. Be sure to snag a copy of their fabulous new album, “Of Earth and Sky.”

A portion (25%) of the proceeds from the sale of the artwork will be donated to an amazing organization in India called the Tamil Nadu Women’s collective. A three time grantee of the Global Fund for Women, TNWC is a network of rural grassroots women’s groups that promotes collective farms throughout the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. TNWC aims to strengthen rural women’s food sovereignty by encouraging them to grow native millet varieties that are nutritious, drought resistant and easier to grow than rice or wheat.

The collective focuses on Dalit rights, local governance, rights of workers in the unorganised sector and rights of senior citizens. With the collective’s support and guidance, women farmers have gained necessary agricultural skills, improved their decision-making capacities, leadership qualities and thereby enhanced their economic and social status.

The head of the group, Sheelu Francis has been nominated for a Women of Worth award that is given in partnership between L’Oreal and NDTV (Indian television network). Be sure to vote!
