bam-borders

LEIMAY presents borders at BAM Fisher // World premiere performance, visual art exhibition, and book publication.

About the performance: After the critically-acclaimed BECOMING-corpus (2013) at BAM, LEIMAY returns with the sequel, borders. Sound, light, voice, and movement orbit, collide, fuse, and repel to create a hauntingly evocative landscape of bodies turned inside out. Shige Moriya and Ximena Garnica envelops audiences in a universe at the thresholds of itself, setting stillness against high physicality, visceral vocalizations against sonic harmonies, and dissolving forms through walls of light and mutable axes of space.

About the exhibition: The visual art component of borders echoes back to materials used in LEIMAY’s past works – latex skins and molded aluminum mesh – that catch, cover and uncover the body in a space-between, where corporeal outlines and densities are broken, dissolved, and reimagined. During the process of Becoming- Corpus, the flesh of performers was imprinted into thin skins which now, years later, hang in the middle of the gallery as an architecture of artifactual memory. On the walls, latex encloses clay figures that are dismembered by space and suspended in light: a figure caught in a floating point. The body’s form becomes lost and reimagined by absence. In another sculpture series, mesh aluminum masks are enclosed in concrete. A glimpse of a wire face peers out from the irregularities in the concrete, the exposure of which is both vulnerable and peculiar.

About the process book: The borders book accompanying the premiere of the stage production traces the steps leading up to borders through words, images, and the histories surrounding LEIMAY’s research, ideas, and actions. Acting as both a recollection of past events and a complementary component of borders, this book walks through the process-based work of LEIMAY while triggering visions toward the future of the company. The borders book was produced by Lucy Kerr and Hiram Pines in collaboration Ximena Garnica and Shige Moriya. As a document and an object, it seeks to ask the questions and reflect the research at the heart of borders itself.

  1. I would like to purchase a copy of ‘The Borders Process Book.’ I was not aware of it when I saw yesterday’s spectacular performance.
Please tell me how to order a copy.
    THANK YOU
