Suspended: Images of Identity, Memory, and Home

Photographs by Ilisa Katz Rissman

For years, Ilisa Katz Rissman P’15, P’27 has been actively photographing the people and environments around her. By focusing on small moments and personal encounters, she attempts to illustrate larger themes of the human condition inherent in various stages of life which ultimately bond us together.

By choosing a large-format film camera, Ilisa is able to use the confrontational nature of the shoot to create a tableau with her subject, revealing the often difficult process of how we expose ourselves to each other.

Ilisa’s environmental studies of things quotidian and in the natural world complement her portraiture by providing a sense of place as well as alluding figuratively to the passage of time. Working from the perspective of a woman (and mother) at a particular juncture, Ilisa creates emotionally charged, provocative images that explore the meaning of identity, memory, and home.

Please join the artist at an opening reception on Tuesday, October 6, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Suspended is on view in The Carol Shen Gallery, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., through Friday, October 30.
