Artist Statement
I believe there is a universal appeal in the specific and that a work depicting a small, personal scene will also resonate with viewers. My aim is to successfully convey the feelings that initially attract me to a scene through the choices I make – from the colors and composition to more subtle elements. While my pieces have often been described as realistic, I never try to hide the fact that the work is a painting not a photographic interpretation. A successful painting will always manipulate reality in order to convey the artist’s vision.

My kids said, “How does he do that?” Gorgeous, Ted, really nice.
Beautiful work. I can’t fathom how you get that level of detail on such a small space. What brand of paints do you use and what do you paint on (paper? canvas?) Also, what kinds of brushes? Thanks, Ted. Great stuff.
Thank you, I’m glad you like my paintings. I am not so finicky about my materials but tend to use Turner Design Gouache for doing underpaintings and then work on top with Liquitex acrylics. Feb Pharmacy and Donut Shop were painted on canvas boards, Coffee Shop was painted on an illustration board and Moutarde was painted on a wood board. I also paint on framed canvases and other materials. Wood is a favorite. I use both round and flat brushes, mostly sable but also some synthetics which can take a beating, but always the sables for the finer work.
